have you considering to do the Rosaria + Vampire DVDs?

  • 2. blinx01  |  December 27, 2008 at 12:33 am

Nope. Not really a series I’m interested in working on. Already got enough projects to keep me busy for now.
I think someone over at ADC (see links) said they were going to do it though.

Always looking forward to what ever you putting up, Thanks’ for the Despair, blinx01!

[...] Ανέλπιστο και απίστευτο δώρο από τον Blinx01 λίγο πριν το τέλος του χρόνου! Ολόκληρη η πρώτη season του Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei σε DVD ISO με custom vobsubs φτιαγμένους από τα fansubs των [a.f.k]!!! Το είχα δει πριν λίγες μέρες στο asiandvdclub και είπα "this is so gonna kill my ratio", αλλά τώρα το έβαλε και σε public. Δεν είστε εδώ, έχετε ήδη φύγει για να το κατεβάσετε! [...]

    INSTANT FAIL. I’M IN DESPAIR!!!

  • 6. blinx01  |  December 27, 2008 at 1:26 pm

I think people would be in even more despair if each disc was dual layered DVD9. ;)
You’re not missing much to the honest.
Only highlights were a textless ED and the mock TV news station broadcast with Chiri and the other guy.
The rest were all extracts from the actual episodes.

  • 7. blinx01  |  December 27, 2008 at 3:22 pm

    Ah, forgot to mention a few things;

    - Contains two sub tracks; default is the full whamy, second is a more barebones track with only important signs included.

    - The DVD menu operates in traditional manga style, ie the far right option if the first ep, middle the second ep, and far left the third ep.

    - Scans can be found on aacovers or here; http://asiandvdclub.org/punbb/viewtopic.php?id=9171

    - The DVD’s are different from the TV versions. This includes reworked animation for various scenes, new signs and an uncut version of episode one.

    Arigatou gozaimasu ^^
Do you plan to do the 2nd season too ?

  • 9. blinx01  |  December 27, 2008 at 6:02 pm

At some point in the future, yes, along with the OVA’s.

  • 10. vkun  |  December 27, 2008 at 6:59 pm

Hm, how come you’ve decided to pust this one on a public tracker, since pretty much everyone can join ADC. Just curious.

  • 11. blinx01  |  December 27, 2008 at 7:20 pm

Not everyone knows about ADC or has the ratio to download 17GB for this series.
Also, it’s my favourite project I’ve worked on to date and I’d like as many people as possible to have the chance to get this, which is why I’ve put it on a public tracker to get more exposure.

Nice work, will be downloading shortly.

  • 13. Zarovan  |  December 30, 2008 at 9:11 am

Awesome work dude! i will upload as long as i can.

Weird, I have problem with Disk 2 when play with PS3

The subtitles are all in BLACK color …

But it play fine when I try it on PC and another DVD player.

  • 15. blinx01  |  December 30, 2008 at 9:25 pm

Yeah. Unfortunately PS3 is abit iffy with DVD playback, since it uses a first gen Blu-Ray drive.
For some reason, it displays black subs if a DVD has an advanced structure.
No one’s found a solution yet, and no PS3 firmware updated has solved it, so I’d suggest to watch Disc 2 in something other than a PS3.

  • 16. Emiliano  |  December 31, 2008 at 6:15 pm

Hello, I have a question, the subtitles can extract to DVD?

  • 17. blinx01  |  December 31, 2008 at 6:28 pm

    I’m not sure I understand your question…
If you mean can they be extracted, yes, you’d have to OCR them.
If you mean are they already on the DVD, yes, they can be turned off or on.
Hopefully one of those answers your question.

  • 18. 1337sauce  |  January 7, 2009 at 7:40 am

thanks loads for this. kinda just came across this anime randomly and am not regretting it at all. great upload

  • 19. takarada  |  January 16, 2009 at 11:55 am

This is awesome, I hope somebody with more bandwidth & encoding skills than me can turn this into some nice mkvs

  • 20. Maciste  |  January 31, 2009 at 3:24 pm

    Great work! Thank you!

Btw, do you happen to have the DVD covers as printable versions by any chance?

  • 21. blinx01  |  January 31, 2009 at 9:45 pm

The DVD covers, disc labels and character profile inserts are available at AA Covers (see links section).

  • 22. Floflo  |  February 1, 2009 at 5:15 pm

I’m currently converting these DVDs to MKVs with H264/OGG (using variable frame rate because a few shots are telecined while most are pure progressive) for optimal playback on PCs. I’m actually doing these for myself but I think I’ll upload it in a torrent when I’m done (crediting your work) because I couldn’t find any other DVD rip (and since I’m making this anyway I’ll be glad to share it).

I included your custom VobSubs but it would be better if I used ASS or SSA subs. Did you use a.f.k. ’s ASS scripts to create them ?
If yes, could you send them to me or publish them somewhere (or tell me where you can download them since a.f.k. hard subbed the show)?
If no, you must have spent a long time creating the VobSubs :) . Then I might create ASS subtitles from your VobSubs (and a.f.k. ’s subs too in order to try to use the same colors and effects).

  • 23. blinx01  |  February 1, 2009 at 11:59 pm

    @ Floflo
Well I’m happy for them to be shared publically as long as credits are given where due.
As for scripts, any of the series which have only been released hardsubbed by the original groups have been retyped by my hands (well fingers on keyboard ^_^).
And yeah, this one was particually painful and is the result of around 8 months of work.
Anywa, you should be able to create an .ass out of the vob-subs using something such as SubRip. Once it recognizes the font alphabet, it’s a one click operation.

  • 24. Floflo  |  February 2, 2009 at 1:08 am

    Thanks for the answer !
Good job on the “retyping” of the subs. :p

I know how to use OCR to get the subtitles in a text format from VobSubs, so I shouldn’t have to time the subtitles again. But it may still take quite a long time to get them to look fine.

I will tell you whenever I’m done with that.

  • 25. kingbejita  |  February 17, 2009 at 9:17 am

Is there a big difference in quality between DVD9 and DVD5? I feel bad when they release on DVD5 in the R1 region.

  • 26. blinx01  |  February 17, 2009 at 2:19 pm

    @ kingbejita
    In this case no.
R1 DVD’s are larger in size as they contain 4 eps on average and 2 audio tracks along with extras.
With most R2J’s, they contain 3 eps and 1 audio track and a few extras.
Due to this, I firstly use a special command system within the DVD structure to relink the OP/ED cell’s rather than having 3 copy’s of the same thing.
This allows me to cut down the file size. I then strip go through the extra’s, stripping them until I get down DVD5 size.
This in turn leaves us with the usual superb quality of R2J’s that make R1’s look like bootlegs, all burnable onto a cheap DVD5 disc.

  • 27. kingbejita  |  February 18, 2009 at 4:03 pm

    @blink01
Are all R2Js work that way? I got a couple of R1’s (Elfen Lied and WtoNHK) here and they look fine on conventional TVs but when I play it on widescreen it sucks. I want to see Elfen Lied in R2J

What if you like to rip this to MKV what is the average size to maintain the quality, I have seen Ikkitousen DD (ripped on Nyaa)
and they resized it to 848 x 480??? (I can’t remember) why is it?

    #3
I just joined ADC, I noticed that some Funimation (my mom and sis canceled my Hell Girl order) and ADV titles are going DVD9, are there any improvements on visuals? I guess that’s it for now. Thanks a lot blinx!

  • 28. blinx01  |  February 18, 2009 at 8:56 pm

    #1
You can use this OP/ED cell relinking on any DVD with multiple episodes. Of course if it’s over 3 eps then chances are it still won’t go down to DVD5 level without re-encoding.

    #2
I’m not really all that knowledable with rips, I specialize more with DVD’s, so I couldn’t really give an informed anwer to that question.

    #3
It depends on what you compare them to.
If you compare it to older R1 stuff then yes, the quality and episode count has risen thanks to DVD9.
However, if you compare to R2J video quality then the difference is huge in R2J’s favour.
With R1 it’s all about lots of episodes and cheap sets. This means the quality gets sacrificed.
With R2J it’s less about quantity and more about quality.
That is why you see so many people starting to add subs to R2J DVD’s, because the quality is vastly superior to the R1 stuff you can get, and fans want their fav shows in the best quality as possible on DVD.

    About question #2:
When you rip DVDs to MKVs with H264 codec, the optimal (in terms of human perception) bitrate (and thus filesize) varies depending on the complexity of the graphics and amount of motion. It can go from 1000 kbps up to 2200 kbps and more for complex stuff (for a 24 minutes episode you get a filesize of 200 to 420 MB).

About the resolution (size in pixels), the best is to keep the original DVD resolution, while cropping the black bars on the edge of the video. For this to look right on a PC screen, you have to use anamorphic (non square pixels) encoding.
I think the Ikkitousen rip you talked about is 848×480 and not 720×480 (original DVD resolution) because the rippers decided to horizontally stretch the video to get square pixels (more compatible ?). But then you get a little less quality for the same bitrate (more pixels to encode).

For the rip I’m currently making, I take all of this into account. But recently my external HDD was destroyed (fell off a table) and I had to start over… so don’t expect the files to be ready before a while.

I’m also using MKV linked chapters to make something similar to what blinx01 made on his DVDs (OP and ED only encoded once and linked from the episodes)

  • 30. kingbejita  |  February 21, 2009 at 7:02 am

The quality is superb (I can say it’s near to HD material) on our Sony SDTV Wega (well you know it’s a Sony) however with my Chimei 22″ LCD…something is not right wether played on a DVD player or ROM (my LCD will work on both) I tried changing the settings but maybe I’m not getting it right…should I turn off the backlight?

Any recommended DVD software player for the PC?

  • 31. kingbejita  |  February 21, 2009 at 9:22 am

    @Floflo
thanks a lot for the info.

  • 32. kingbejita  |  February 21, 2009 at 11:07 am

Sorry guys >.< I just found out that I need to purchase a DVI cable for my LCD (just bought it this month), I’ve been busy I’m going to buy tommorow so I can see the BIG difference….I can’t wait. ;P

  • 33. wheaty  |  February 26, 2009 at 5:57 am

    @Floflo
Ouch, sorry to hear about the HDD crash. But a suggestion about the mkv encoding; some people (like me!) are stuck with mplayer, which can’t really play linked chapters in mkv files. That’s one vote for no linked chapters, but regardless good luck! I look forward to seeing the end product

  • 34. MikeGold  |  March 15, 2009 at 3:07 pm

Maybe you could do a simple patch for those damn black subtitles. The thing is that DVD looks the best on my PS3 because it has a really good upscaler and on 50” plasma you can see the difference. Well, somehow other DVDs works fine on it even if they are styled and everything. If you only have some spare time it would be mostly appreciated.

And on the other hand, stop saying that DLDVD are expensive. DL costs at most as much as 4 normal DVDs which is about 1.5E. It’s not a fortune considering great stuff thats on it. We are downloading DVDs for quality. Sorry, I didn’t meant to be harsh…

  • 35. blinx01  |  March 15, 2009 at 4:03 pm

    @ MikeGold
    See post 15.
There is no way to correct this.
PS3, being a first gen Blu-Ray player, has rather limited DVD playback. For whatever reason, it can’t handle certain DVD structures, and thus plays back black subs. It also can’t handle relinked cell’s, which is why you’ll notice it hault once it goes to the 2nd ep OP/ED and onwards.
Hopefully Sony can correct this issue with a firmware update, but considering how long it’s been since release, I doubt they will since they want you watching Blu-Ray’s on it, not DVD’s.

As for DVD9, I personally use them myself. I don’t like re-encoded stuff at all. Only reason I provide them here rather than DVD9 is because the majority of people don’t have a dual layer burner or media, as they’re used to mkv files rather than large DVD’s.

DVD9 versions of my releases can be found at ADC or usenet.

  • 36. Floflo  |  March 19, 2009 at 1:45 pm

What are the DVD extras you stripped from them? Are they uninteresting or did you strip them only because otherwise it wouldn’t fit in DVD5?

  • 37. blinx01  |  March 19, 2009 at 1:49 pm

Stripped them so they would fit on DVD5.
It was stuff like textless OP/ED and segments from the actual episodes.

  • 38. Floflo  |  March 30, 2009 at 10:38 am

Hmmm… One last thing. Did you notice that in the first 3 episodes, the OP actually isn’t exactly the same (different little “story”) ? But since the OP is relinked in your DVDs, they only contain the 1st version.
Well it’s not really important as those stories are not really useful for the story nor interesting, just like the blackboard writings. So you don’t have to answer this post. :p

  • 39. blinx01  |  March 30, 2009 at 11:35 am

Yes. Problem was that the cons outweighed the pros.
The text is too large in quantity to sub and doesn’t appear long enough to be read. So it was a question of if people would rather have some kanji they couldn’t read and have to use a DVD9, or relink the OP/ED’s and result in a DVD5.
    Wasn’t exactly a tough decision. ^_^
