I present what is probably well up there as the best series from 2009, Bakemonogatari.
I’m basically using the materials Coalgirls used; qIIq (Typeset), Koharubi (Script).
There are two sub tracks;
1. Default – The full whammy with all the signs
2. Alternate – Clean, no signs at all, just dialogue
Enjoy.

Oh my god, what the hell is on 1st screen?
If all our typesetting is now styled like this please don’t mention is as authors anymore

blinx01 | October 14, 2009 at 9:34 pm
DVD’s do not use .ass scripts. They use vob-subs and thus everything has to be restyled to meet DVD specification standards.
If only it was as simple as slapping an .ass script onto a DVD, but alas, we are not dealing with rips here, but full DVDISO’s.
You guys are credited because the signs are using your translation and timing, but obviously not your styling and positioning. Same for Koharubi with the dialogue.

My bad. I know nothing about DvD typesetting. But still… *stares on first screenshot*

@ killerhex
Yeah. Gonna wait for the member on ADC to do season 2, then start work on season 3.
Focusing on finishing other projects in the mean time.
@ Alva
Heh. Unforunately not much you can do with vob-subs (see official DVD releases for example). No flashy stuff such as fade in-out, moving etc. Just the bare bones.
Like night and day when compared with working with .ass where the possibilities are endless.

It’s possible to get all of the flashy typesetting and karaoke that subbers love these days onto a DVD but, the subs would have to be hard encoded onto the video. That is how subs were added VHS back in the day. The reason that the professionals don’t hard encode subtitles anymore though, is because you would not be able to disable them. Which means that having subs in more than one language would be a wall of text nightmare. That’s not really a problem if the DVD is only meant for viewers that only know one language but, the audio is in another. Which is the case here. Also, I see that you got Maria†Holic vol.1 out. I had wanted to take that on as my first project but, the DVD extras and my lack of understanding of Japanese meant I gave up on that pretty quick. I am glad to see that you were able to get that out. Keep up the good work!

great work Blinx01, this is one of the most visually stunning shows this year, and I like the story too, would love to see the blu-ray of this get subtitled,
will comment on that subject later, Himitsu desu………
not on doing this show on blu-raym but blu-ray in general

blinx01 | October 15, 2009 at 1:22 pm
@ killerhex
No. Someone at ADC already said they were doing it there.
@ Anon
There’s no point in a DVD relase if you hardsub. You have to re-encode the video, losing quality, and you don’t have the option to do what I did here, which is including another sub track without the signs for those who want a ‘cleaner’ viewing.
Maria†Holic was not done by me, but mudduck454, who’s blog I have in my links section.

Qki-José | October 16, 2009 at 4:54 pm
How do I remove the extra content of a DVD and leaving quality intact?
20.
blinx01 | October 16, 2009 at 5:11 pm
@ Qki-José
Use a program such as DVD Remake Pro.
21.
zomglazerpewpewpew | October 17, 2009 at 3:37 pm
Another question…. did you put any subtitles for the secondary audio tracl?
22.
blinx01 | October 17, 2009 at 5:23 pm
@ zomglazerpewpewpew
No since there is no translation available anywhere.

25.
blinx01 | October 22, 2009 at 4:19 pm
@ Mugi
I don’t like to nail down exact dates, but most likley looking at sometime next week.
All the DVD’s are done, just a matter of uploading them to my server.

Thank you for the update. Looking forward for it!

what program do you use to softsub a .ASS file onto a DVD? I can only hardcode a .ASS file to a file, keeping all of the original typesettings etc, but I’ll really like to know how I could do it DVD optional subbed, thanks.
28.
blinx01 | October 24, 2009 at 6:59 am
@ Balrog
You can’t use .ASS on DVD. It has to be .SSA.
See the tutorial for more info.
29.
Balrog | October 24, 2009 at 3:33 pm
I tried to, but it seems like the link it not working.
Just a small question, I have a “Typesetted” .ASS File, if I use subresync to save it as a .SSA file, it keeps the original typesettings.
From there if I MKVMerge it back with the new subs and ConvertXToDVD it, will it still keep the original “Typesetted” look? as a DVD Softsub?
Thanks.
30.
blinx01 | October 24, 2009 at 3:51 pm
@ Balrog
Try it now. Changed the link.

re: “The reason that the professionals don’t hard encode subtitles anymore though, is because you would not be able to disable them.”
It’d be possible in theory, via multiangle/seamless branching, but it’s a lot of effort for very little (I’d say negligible) gain.

How I transform a DVD9 –> DVD5?
34.
killerhex | October 24, 2009 at 10:39 pm
can i use dvd remake pro to encode a lpcm audio to ac3
35.
blinx01 | October 24, 2009 at 10:52 pm
@ KaitoX
The font in that pic is ‘Arial Rounded MT’, size 20, outline size 3.
Use DVD Remake Pro to strip stuff and/or relink OP/ED.
36.
blinx01 | October 24, 2009 at 10:53 pm
@ killerhex
No. You need Sonic Audio Transcoder or BeSweet.
The first is the better option though.
37.
KaitoX | October 25, 2009 at 2:09 am
and for the box “Non SSA properties” is everything okay?

blinx01 | October 27, 2009 at 5:57 am
If using AA, I usually have it set to 200 rather than 54.
Apart from that, looks fine.
39.
KaitoX | October 27, 2009 at 8:26 pm
¿AA? ¿What is this?
Sorry xp
40.
blinx01 | October 27, 2009 at 9:19 pm
AA = antialias.
It smoothes the pixels so they don’t look jagged.
You need to be using color rendering option one to use it.

Hi. I really appreciate your work, and love Bakemonogatari.
I really hate to have to ask this on my first post. But, as this is my first fan-dvd burning, I’m wondering if there’s some specific kind of player I need for the DVD or something?
I burned it, and it looks great, but I can’t seem to get the subtitles to work.
I’d really appreciate any help I can get. And again, thanks for all of your hard work. ^_^
46.
blinx01 | February 2, 2010 at 9:29 pm
@ Zearth
Will work on any DVD player.
What sort of TV are you watching on?
47.
Zearth | February 2, 2010 at 11:35 pm
I watch DVDs on Windows Media Player on my PC.

They should be work then.
Perhaps try using something else like Power DVD or similiar?
